SAI worked with the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) to undertaking two concurrent projects at CHEO’s Ottawa location, which include –
- Expansion of the Inpatient Mental Health Unit (Level 6) – An addition of 4 bedrooms with a new Satellite Team Station, Sensory Room, Dining Room, Break Room, Kitchen and dedicated department entrance vestibule.
- Emergency Department Mental Health Short Stay Suite – Alterations to the emergency department to provide 4 dedicated mental health observation rooms with accompanying team station and consult room.

CHEO provides services for children up to 18 years of age. The Mental Health Renovation Project create spaces in the Emergency Department as well as improvements to inpatient services to help support families and children in crisis.
To achieve this, the design imagined calming colours and natural woods to offer patients a variety of safe, secure spaces to work with clinical staff.
The sensory room is designed to create a calming experience for clients in a safe environment.
