Georgian College Gymnasium Expansion

The Georgian College Gymnasium Expansion was the renovation of an existing gymnasium and athletic complex. The renovation includes an indoor double gymnasium, change facilities, an entrance lobby with reception area, staff office, and storage rooms. A second level accommodates a fitness centre and an indoor walking track overlooking the gymnasium. Full-height electronic divider curtains allow the gymnasium to be divided into four quadrants.

This project was undertaken in association with Michael McKnight Architect. SAI served as the lead architect responsible for the design and documentation of the project from initial programming through to construction completion. As the Architect of Record, SAI continued involvement through contract administration phase.

Adding the running track required some structural ingenuity cantilevering the support structure off of the existing columns. The resulting running track has added another dimension to the Gym because of its broad appeal-students as well as faculty and outside users enjoy the new facility. An added bonus for the users was the inclusion of a 2 storey climbing wall at the main entrance. This feature adds a dynamic dimension to the facility.
