Mackenzie Health MRI Suite

Following the planned acquisition of a new 3.0T MRI, the Hospital engaged SAI for full architectural services to design the suite in conjunction with the operational requirements of the Diagnostic Imaging Department. Through numerous user consultation meetings, a detailed design was developed that achieved an efficient workflow by maintaining maximum flexibility for staff circulation and patient prep. Automatic sliding doors were incorporated into the suite to minimize required floor space and to permit the zone security for access to the magnet. This allowed for incorporation of an interview prep room, patient holding and change area as well as a barrier-free washroom to be incorporated into the available area.

To enhance the patient experience, an exterior window has been provided in the exam room that allows for views to the adjacent wooded ravine and alleviates the sense of enclosure in the room that can lead to patient claustrophobia. In addition, a raised ceiling around the magnet provides an expanded area proportionate to the dimensions of the MRI equipment to enhance a comfortable perception of the room. A recessed LED cove light provides a full spectrum of colour to the ceiling to allow the technicians to dynamically control the ambient lighting in the room, depending on the requirements for patient comfort.
